What's Behind the Term Horsepower?

If you have ever wondered what horsepower is it is basically a way to measure power. Power in cars that is. Way back in the good old days a man by the name of James Watt came up with a new way to measure power.

One horsepower is the equivalent of a pony pulling 33 pounds for a minute so that can imagine just how powerful a vehicle with say 365 horsepower would be. He wanted his steam engines to be appealing to his potential customers, so he used the measurement of horsepower to describe just how powerful these engines were. Just like back then, the more horsepower that a vehicle has the better and more powerful it is.
