As Volvo electric cars gain in popularity, drivers who are unfamiliar with EVs sometimes find themselves scratching their heads with confusion over the terms used to discuss these vehicles. The parlance used in conversations about EVs is unfamiliar to many motorists, which is why we thought we'd explain what some commonly used EV terms mean.

AEV

If you look through the latest Volvo models at our location, you'll see some all-electric vehicles or AEVs. These vehicles employ an electric motor and a battery pack for propulsion. You can recharge an AEV using an external power source. The Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is an example of an AEV.

BEV

"BEV" is shorthand for battery-electric vehicle. This term is synonymous with AEV, which means you can use the two interchangeably.

EV

Often used to refer to AEVs exclusively, EV actually refers to automobiles that operate using an electric motor at least part-time. Given that definition, EV can also refer to traditional hybrids and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles as well as AEVs.

EV Charging

All-electric cars and PHEVs require EV charging for their battery packs. If you contact our Volvo dealership near Jacksonville, NC, we'll explain that there are three types of charging, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 or DC Fast Charging. Level 1 is the slowest option while DC Fast Charging is the quickest.

MPGe

Miles per gallon equivalent or MPGe is determined by the distance an AEV can travel using 33.7 kWh of energy, which happens to be the same amount of energy contained in one gallon of gas. This measurement can be compared to a traditional car's MPG to determine which automobile is more efficient.

Range

Whether you shop with Volvo Cars of New Bern online or in person, you'll see that AEVs have estimated driving ranges. A given car's range gives you an idea of the number of miles the vehicle can travel between charges.

Range Anxiety

This term refers to the fear drivers sometimes experience if they think a BEV can't make it from one place to another on a single charge. With AEVs increasing their ranges all the time and more public charging stations available for use across the country, this type of anxiety is quickly going the way of the dodo bird.

Volvo Recharge

Introduced in 2021, the term "Volvo Recharge" refers to the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and all-electric cars manufactured by the automaker we proudly represent.
